Education Requirements
1. Undergraduate
- Bachelor’s Degree: Students must earn a four-year bachelor’s degree, often in biology, chemistry, or pre-med.
- Prerequisites: Coursework must include chemistry, biology, physics, and calculus to prepare for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
- GPA and Extracurriculars: High academic performance (often a 3.5+ GPA) and research experience are essential for admission to medical school.
2. Medical School
- Earn Degree: Students attend a four-year accredited medical school to earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
- Curriculum: The first two years focus on pre-clinical sciences (classroom/lab), while the last two years involve clinical rotations in various specialties.
- Licensing Exams: Students must pass the first two parts of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) (or COMLEX for DOs).
3. Internship/Residency
- Internship: Before starting dermatology training, doctors complete a one-year internship in a broad-based clinical field, such as internal medicine, surgery, or family medicine.
- Dermatology Residency: A three-year, ACGME-accredited residency program specializing in dermatology. This provides hands-on experience in dermatological surgery, clinical dermatology, and dermatopathology.
- Board Certification: After completing residency, dermatologists take the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) certifying exam.
4. Optional additional training
Often Dermatologist will train and become specialized in a specific field of dermatology including skin cancer, pediatric, and or cosmetic.

What do I choose?
Personally I would go to the University of Miami so I can take advantage of the Bright Futures Scholarships. The University of Miami’s dermatology department is a world class research and medical center. The University of Miami has the largest in-patient dermatology service in the United States. The tuition at the University of Miami’s dermatology department is $63,140 annually.
Road To Dream Job
To become a dermatologist you first have to go through at least 12 years of training. Dermatology is a highly competitive field requiring top medical school grades, high USMLE scores, and good social skills. One of the most important parts is being able to make personal connections with patients.
